How to tailor an ATS-friendly resume to a job

By Mr Job Agent · Reviewed

An ATS-friendly, tailored resume presents your relevant experience clearly for a specific job. Start with accurate career facts, use the job description to choose what to emphasize, and check the exported file. No template or keyword count guarantees an ATS score or an interview.

Build one accurate career record first

Check employer names, job titles, dates, education and achievements after importing your resume. Add relevant information that was missing from the upload. A strong application can emphasize a real achievement differently; it cannot turn a requirement from a job description into experience you do not have.

If a vacancy asks for enterprise demand generation, highlight supported examples of pipeline growth or B2B campaigns when they exist in your record. If that experience is missing, treat it as a gap rather than adding the phrase as a qualification.

Create a job-specific resume in Mr Job Agent

Tailoring starts after you select an opportunity, so the application materials have a concrete role and job description to work from. Your original career profile remains editable.

  1. Open Searched Jobs and select the opportunity you want to pursue.
  2. Open its application kit and choose resume generation.
  3. Review the tailored content against your actual experience and the original job description.
  4. Choose from the 16 formats and inspect the actual PDF preview.
  5. Export PDF or DOCX, following the employer's requested file type.

Choose a readable format and inspect the export

Start with a simple layout when the employer does not specify a format. Keep section labels, dates and role details easy to follow. Visual designs can help a human reader, but different employer systems can interpret files differently. Mr Job Agent does not claim that a design passes every applicant tracking system.

The application kit shows the actual PDF layout, including page breaks. Check that contact information is readable, text is not clipped and each employer and role is correctly associated with its dates. As a practical check, select or copy text from the exported PDF and make sure its order still makes sense.

PDF preserves the previewed layout. DOCX lets you edit the content, but its appearance can change with fonts and the software used to open it. Review the file you actually intend to submit.

Can I have a two-page resume?

Two pages are a layout preference, not a reason to remove legitimate work history. A longer career record may need additional pages. Preview the whole export and choose a format that balances readable text with the information the employer needs.

Changing formats uses the saved application content rather than generating another version of your career facts. You can keep the resume and skip the optional cover letter or outreach message.

Check the application before sending it

Read every generated sentence. Verify numbers, dates, credentials and skills, and remove any statement that is not supported. Use relevant job terminology only where it accurately describes your work.

Free includes one job-specific kit with repeat downloads. Review current access on the pricing page before relying on additional generation. Mr Job Agent helps prepare materials; you choose when and where to submit them.
